I’ve been eyeing a few handwoven lightweight cotton samples for a bit. My first experiment with this particular shade of indigo blue was in a completely different pattern but when I started working on the Knots technique, I knew I wanted to revisit natural indigo.
Reworking hand woven fabric with a machine sounds counterintuitive to say the least if one does not consider the amount of handwork that goes into the embroidery. To know that this was once the only way cloth was ever made and to know it is disappearing and then to decorate and alter it with machines that are causative to the death of hand-weaving can be thought of as bastardizing the craft.
I personally view it as gaining the courage to experiment with days of generation-old craftsmanship and hours of my own to bring about something that adds a visual element to a strong heritage.
